Graphic Novels

Graphic novels have a special place in my heart as I grew up reading them as a child. I would always check them out from my local library and enjoyed reading them especially over my summer break. The graphic novel I picked up in Bird Library was called Astro Boy, a thrilling adventure of a young boy who defeats various enemies such as an alien created by a scientist. Graphic novels are incredibly entertaining to read because of the short text blurbs that are paired with photos. I only picked up this novel because I liked the cover art, however after reading 50 or so pages it actually really reminded me of our WRT 205 class inquiry of technology. This graphic novel talked a lot about futuristic technology such as equipment to create alien enemies and special weapons and lasers which Astro Boy used to defeat his enemies. I have seen this as a common theme throughout a few different graphic novels I've read in the past, the concept of futuristic technology to create an adventure story. It will be interesting to read these stories in the far future when futuristic technology like mentioned in the novel actually exists. Adding technology concepts to a story can add a very interesting aspect to graphic novels. I think it's fun, especially for younger readers to read a graphic novel like Astro Boy and imagine the story being real as you get lost in the pages. Specifically in one page of this book I read, Astro Boy fell off the top of a building and used a wrist watch that when activated, launched a net on the ground to catch him from his fall. I stopped reading after this just to imagine how cool this would be in real life if the technology existed because it has such an intriguing aspect to it.
